Glossary of VoIP Terms

          Channel A transmission path
          Circuit Carries a single phone call on the PSTN.
          Codec Coder/Decoder. An algorithm or chipset that converts analog sound to digital data and vice-versa.
          Jitter The variation in the time between the arrival of packets caused by network congestion, timing drift, or route changes.
          Latency The time taken for a voice signal to travel from the person speaking to the person listening.
          Packet The elementary unit of data transferred on the Internet or any packet-switched network.
          POTS Plain Old Telephone Service. The type of service carried on the PSTN.
          PSTN Public Switched Telephone Network. The telephone system based on copper wires carrying analog signals.
          TCP/IP Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. The basic method through which information is transferred over the Internet.
          VoIP Voice over Internet Protocol. A method for communicating via telephone by converting analog voice signals to digital packets for transmission over the Internet or a private network.
